貧しい片田舎のダーチア村。正義感溢れる少年・カナタは、村のために飛び回る父の背中を追い、幼なじみのミゼラたちと共に村の役に立とうと奮闘していた。だが行商から父が還った夜、世界は一変する。父はミゼラら孤児たちを引き取る一方、彼らを高値で富裕層に売っていたのだ。信じていた正義が瓦解する中、カナタはミゼラを守るため、父を刺し殺してしまう。カナタの行為は村人に露見し、村人は皆カナタへの裁きを願った――。
